Once you've lost that fat layer that has been sitting on your belly for years, all the ab exercises are good to build ab muscles and let the 6 pack stick out. There's no doubt about it, you have to give your abs the 6 pack shape.
But here we're focusing on how to get rid of belly fat, and only after that you can do ab exercises.
Compound Exercises to Lose Belly Fat
I already explained that we can't target fat loss in specific areas of the body because when you burn fat it affects overall body fat (read the article Diet to Lose Belly Fat for more details).
That's why if you think that you can burn belly fat by doing ab workout you'll be soon disappointed that nothing is happening.
The best exercises to lose belly fat are those exercises that require lot of energy because they make you burn more calories than others.
These exercises must involve multiple muscle groups to stress more muscle fibres and burn more calories.
Are you more tired after doing squats or bicep curls? The answer is obvious, squat is a much harder exercise. It works your legs (quads and hamstrings) and glutes that are the biggest muscles of your body.
They use a lot of energy and burn many more calories than your biceps. You have to focus on these exercises that involve multiple muscle groups and multiple joints if you want to build more muscle mass and burn more fat.
You don't burn belly fat directly, but some of the fat loss will come from your belly for sure.
These exercises are called compound exercises and are the fundamental movements that you should do at the gym.
Compound exercises are:
- Leg Press
- Bench Press
- Shoulder Press
- Lat Machine or Pull Ups/Chin Ups
- Lat Rows
There are the effective exercises to lose belly fat. Forget isolation exercises that are good to gain more definition but don't have the purpose of building muscle mass and burning fat.
To take full advantage of your workout remember that cardio training is very important to burn fat.
The best cardio exercises to lose belly fat are:
- Running/Jogging (outdoor or on a treadmill)
- Riding a Bike (exercise bike is perfect)
- Elliptical Training
- Walking (if you can't run just walk for 30 minutes a day)
- Aerobic Rowing
Anything that involves movement, especially if you can do it for at least 20 or 30 minutes.
